HISTORY

In November 2019, 14 UK-based funders made a public commitment to tackle climate change and called on other funders to join. This marked the launch of the UK Funder Commitment on Climate Change by the ACF (Association of Charitable Foundations) and the beginning of the #PhilanthropyForClimate movement.

The idea of having a common framework to encourage and enable all foundations, regardless of their mission, to integrate a climate lens across their work was brought to the European level through the PEXForum 2020 in Madrid with the support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation. That same year, France and Spain created their national commitments under the leadership of CffC (Coalition Française des Fondation pour le climat) and AEF (Associación Española de Fundaciones), respectively. In 2020 the European Philanthropy Coalition for Climate (hosted by Philea) was created to drive and support this work across Europe.

In 2021 Canada and Italy launched their national commitments with PFC (Community Foundations of Canada, Environment Funders Canada, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, and The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada) and Assifero on the lead. Given the global scale of the crisis and the urgent need for action everywhere, the movement grew even further with the launch of the International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change in an event at COP26, in Glasgow. The International Commitment was co-created by a WINGS Climate Task Force made up of over 40 foundation networks and philanthropy support organisations from 21 countries around the world.

Hosted by WINGS, the International Commitment aims to facilitate the engagement of Philanthropic organisations in all regions, with a particular focus on developing countries.
